Hayden flies Ducati flag, overtakes Rossi overall
The ever-consistent Nicky Hayden is rewarded for his sixth place charge at Laguna Seca as he surpasses Valentino Rossi in the overall standings.
Ben Spies Got a Technical Failure with His Swingarm
Ben Spies continued to experience his run of bad luck for his home race. Spies made a strong start from the grid, slotting in behind Casey Stoner in fourth through the first turn. Although unable to stay with the front pack the Texan was looking comfortable holding fourth ahead of Andrea Dovizioso until a dramatic crash in the corkscrew on the 22nd lap caused by a technical failure with his swingarm.

"We had a technical failure in the swingarm. I was feeling really good, I didn’t have the grip that I had in the earlier sessions with the harder tyre but in the last ten laps I was starting to pull away and I had a little left up my sleeve. We started to stretch out a lead over Dovi then all of a sudden at the bottom of the corkscrew the bike went out from underneath me. I had no control, it didn’t slide or anything just completely went. At first I thought I’d hit a bump but there isn’t one there. It’s nobody’s fault but it’s more bad luck.”

Räikkönen lamenting early KERS problem
Kimi Räikkönen has now finished on the podium five times in 11 races since returning to Formula 1. Despite that statistic, the 2007 World Champion is annoyed that an early KERS issue may have deprived him of victory in Budapest on Sunday.

Aleix Espargaró and Randy De Puniet continue to dominate new MotoGP class
Free practice for the USGP got underway at the legendary Laguna Seca circuit today with the MotoGP class supported on track by national championships as opposed to the usual Moto3 and Moto2 support categories. Dani Pedrosa set the pace in both sessions, followed in each by the same order of Lorenzo, Stoner, Spies, Dovizioso and Crutchlow. With ideal temperatures of around 20ºC the lap times were already inside the records from 2010 on an impressive opening day of action that was interrupted by a red flag with ten minutes remaining after a crash for Rossi caused damage to the air fences.
Once again there was very little to separate the POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar pair of Aleix Espargaró and Randy de Puniet, the Spaniard edging out his French team-mate by just 0.035 seconds as the fastest CRT on track. Aleix improved by a massive 1.5 seconds between the two sessions whilst Randy's pace was up even more, by three seconds, after some technical setbacks during the morning outing. The pair lie eleventh and twelfth fastest respectively overnight with two MotoGP prototypes behind them.
11th Aleix Espargaró 1.23.835 (39 laps): “This is a totally new circuit for us with no prior data and the electronics didn't work as we'd hoped this morning. We reset them for the afternoon and the improvement was notable. I am happy with the first day but we'll try to keep improving tomorrow. In Italy we thought we'd struggle to compete with the MotoGP prototypes because of the long straight but we were closer than we expected and here it is the opposite. It is a slow and short circuit and we are some way off the top lap times. We have to improve power in the bottom three gears. We are using the same chassis that we tested at Mugello so we'll see if we can get more out of it tomorrow. I really like the Corkscrew but personally I am more impressed by the elevation change at the end of the main straight.”
12th Randy De Puniet 1.23.870 (31 laps): “It hasn't been a smooth landing for us here at Laguna Seca, due to some electronic problems that held us back this morning. Luckily we were able to fix them for the second session. We worked against the clock to improve the engine braking and even though I am still not completely confident with the bike here I am sure we can get back to 100% tomorrow because we have so much room to improve. Despite the problems I feel optimistic because of the way we worked things out. Tomorrow we will keep working on the electronics and the gearbox. This track is so different to anywhere else and there is a lot of work to do.”

Repsol Honda Laguna Seca Preview: Stoner New Engine, Pedrosa 2013 Bike
Pedrosa and Stoner, second and third respectively after the first half of the Championship, have both won in Laguna Seca in the past. Stoner has taken the top step of the podium twice (in 2007 and 2011, the two seasons in which he was MotoGP World Champion) and Pedrosa won in 2009 and crashed the year after while leading the race. Two additional podium finishes for each (Stoner in 2008 and 2010 and Pedrosa in 2006 and 2011) make both Honda factory riders confident to fight at front of the field in California.

"I'm really looking forward to racing in Laguna Seca. The atmosphere there is fantastic and it's a very particular track, nothing like what we are used to in Europe. Laguna is very small, bumpy and technical. Last year it was a very hard race for me due to the lack of fitness, so I hope to enjoy riding there again as we did in the past. Honda has made a big effort to bring the new parts to Laguna so we'll have our standard bike but we'll also get the new engine and chassis we tested in Mugello and I hope we can take advantage of these improvements and have another good race."
Casey Stoner
"I always look forward to going to Laguna, it's a circuit we've enjoyed quite good results at and the atmosphere there is fantastic. The circuit is a very tight and technical and it's definitely a positive that it goes around to the left, as we have less chatter on the left hand side. However, some of the most critical corners are right-handers so it depends how we can get the bike set up before I can say if we'll be competitive. We've had a nice short break since Mugello and we're looking to improve on our results from the last two races. HRC have worked hard in Japan to provide us with the new engine and some parts from the test, hopefully we can have three dry sessions to get some work done and be competitive for Sunday, but we'll have to wait until we get on track."
